Some common-sense tips for orchard enjoyment
1. Some of the critters that live in orchards are bees, wasps, and mosquitoes. Until we have a good hard frost, bringing some mosquito repellant with you is not a bad idea, although we do have some here you can use if you forget yours. Along with that thought, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants can add to your comfort. Good, comfortable walking shoes with socks also make sense, not only to keep the mosquitoes at bay, but also if you happen to step on a fallen apple with several bees munching away, they will get upset and the first thing they will go for is your big toe. Flip-flops or bare feet in the orchard is just not a good idea.
2. An additional thought is that sweet-smelling soaps, perfumes, lotions, or after-shave are fine for a big night out on the town, but are to be discouraged in the orchard. You might want to attract the opposite sex, but not if it is a wasp or mosquito homing in on a sweet smell.
3. We know you love to have your furry companions with you on weekend outings, but we do not allow pets in the orchard. If they do ride along with you, plan on leaving them in the car while you pick.
4. While many apples look great, please remember that if the tree doesn't have a ribbon on it, the apple isn't ready for picking! We have many varieties that do not ripen until late September or early October. Please look for a ribbon on a tree before picking.
